Shockwave Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction
Shockwave therapy for erectile dysfunction (ED) is a treatment that restores a man’s natural ability to achieve and sustain an erection without the aid of drugs. It can also restore confidence and significantly improve relationships that have been strained by this disorder. This treatment can be completed in Tijuana, Mexico, at Dr. Luis Herrera’s surgical facility. It is safe, effective, and causes minimal discomfort. Dr. Herrera is the only doctor who offers this treatment in the Southern California area.
ED, also called impotence, is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection long enough for sexual intercourse. It is estimated that at least 50% of men over the age of 40 have experienced ED at some point. Although this issue can periodically occur for all men, when the issue occurs more often than not, we recommend visiting a specialist. The cause of ED can be different for each patient, but can be due to a variety of physical or psychological factors, such as:
- Certain medications
- Chronic exhaustion
- Alcoholism or substance abuse
- Poor blood flow
- Low testosterone
- Depression and anxiety
- High blood pressure or heart disease
- Negative result of surgery
For men struggling with this issue, it can lead to frustration, poor self-confidence, and relationship issues. If you have been diagnosed with ED, shockwave therapy provides a solution that can restore the erectile mechanism, thus allowing spontaneous erections without the aid of medication. A study published in 2015 found that the treatment had an 80-percent success rate among men ages 45 to 70.

Shockwave Therapy vs. Erectile Dysfunction Medication
While other treatments, such as Viagra® and other oral phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, provide immediate erections when taken, they do not treat the underlying issue. These medications often place the patient at risk for impaired vision, hearing loss, headaches, and other side effects.
Shockwave therapy, however, does not have these side effects. The focused acoustic waves (vibrations) are targeted at deep tissues in the penis that cause mechanical stress and cellular microtrauma, creating a cascade of biological healing reactions. This causes new blood vessels to form, improving the blood flow essential to achieving and maintaining an erection.
The Shockwave Therapy Procedure
Because shockwave therapy is non-invasive and virtually pain-free, no anesthesia is required. During the treatment, Dr. Herrera will use a handheld device to administer shockwaves to the anterior, superior, and pelvic floor muscles, as well as under the testicles and shaft of the penis. The procedure lasts around 15 to 20 minutes and can be repeated through a series of sessions under the guidance of Dr. Herrera. Most patients achieve successful results after just two sessions.
There are no adverse effects with this treatment, and you can return to normal activity immediately afterward. Patients with severe cases of ED can use shockwave therapy in conjunction with medication to achieve the desired results.
